Installation Process of Ford Transit Roof Rack
The installation process can be elaborated into different steps.
First, install the leading pads. The Ford Transit’s many M8 threaded holes allow for the attachment of a roof rack. To clean the sealant (the sticky black material) from an M8 threaded hole, remove the stopper and use Mineral Spirits or another solvent of your choice, such as IPA or paint thinner. Tolerances in the production process might lead to certain holes being out of round.
Grinding, sanding, and finally, painting over any exposed metal with corrosion-resistant paint are all steps necessary to ensure its safety (out of 10 holes, we had to grind 1). When the bolt is torqued, the sealant that we sprayed around the bolt cutout will compress and expand, sealing up any minor gaps and fractures. Attach the landing pad with the provided M8 bolt and sealing washer (13mm hex socket).
Then, install the side rails. The side rails may be installed using the hardware supplied (1/4-20 carriage bolt, washer, and nylock). Leave the hardware a bit slack for now. Install the connecting brackets using the included hardware once the side rails have been installed (1/4 screw, washer, and nylock). Now is the time to finish tightening them to the specified torque.
Now install the crossbars. Loosely install all crossbars except for the front one since the fairing must be linked to it before you can install it, depending on your roof configuration (fan, solar panels, etc.). We utilized the predetermined holes for the time being, and the crossbar will be relocated if necessary. These roof racks’ modularity is one of its most appealing aspects.
Next is installing the fairing; before you slide in the crossbar, preinstall the hardware on the three center brackets (1/4-20 button head screw, lock washer & t-nut insert). Then, insert the three center brackets into the T-slot and tighten the hardware to the crossbar, as shown in the illustration. Use a tape measure or the fairing holes as a reference to find the bracket.
Use a hammer to tap it into position after spreading out the lips of the gasket and forcing it into place with the bottom edge of the fairing. Gently is the operative word in this instance. This side has the rough surfaces of the gasket and fairing.
Using 1/4-20 flange head screws, washers, and nylocks, attach the fairing to the center brackets. The washer goes on the side with the nylock. Snugly tight, yet not so tight that the plastic fairing is damaged. Stack the fairings on top of the roof rack and secure the crossbars to the side rails using the supplied hardware. Afterward, use 1/4-20 flange head screws, washers, and nylocks to fasten the fairing to the side rails.
Hopefully, that’s all there is to it! Loosening the hardware on most brackets will enable you to make slight modifications to the fit.
The next step is to Tighten All the Loose Hardware. Did you remember when we left the side rails and landing pads a bit slack? Those bolts are now at their ultimate tightening tension! First, we built the crossbars, then the landing pads. Check if any additional hardware has escaped your control while you’re at it!
Now we have to install the ladder. Upper and lower ladder sections are attached using two couplers and two 1-4/20 screws. After attaching the ladder, let it slack at this stage. Once again, attach the ladder’s mounting plate to the ladder, but leave it free.
If your van doesn’t have any holes in its mounting plate, you may use this as a template to drill two 1/2-inch holes and then tighten the mounting screws. Make sure the ladder is straight and erect by tightening the remaining loose hardware on the side rails and the mounting plate. Attach the mounting plate and the van’s frame with three or four self-drilling screws.
A roof rack’s weight capacity should also be taken into account while making your purchase. Because getting a roof rack with a much larger weight capacity would be a waste of money if you just have a few goods to transport with it,
Roof racks with greater weight capacity are more expensive than roof racks with the lower weight capacity. A little roof rack won’t hold enough goods if you’re hauling a lot of things on your car’s top, on the other hand. However, you should only ever load your roof rack to its maximum weight capability.
